LoungeList: Jackson's Local Social Network

What's the ONE FUN THING you wish was available in Jackson?

For me, the list is long.

I'll start with...

Clean, smokeless lounges and kareoke bars. I *don't* support ordinances that ban smoking in bars. I *do* support locales that offer a smoke-free setting.

I have a long list, too. I can't start with just one, but will limit it to two:

1) A movie-house-slash-restaurant, like the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin

2)A salsa-dancing bar!
SERIOUSLY. The Alamo is awesome. I cried when the way-too-short-lived Video Cafe shut down (well, sort of. The place itself was okay. The IDEA was awesome.)

I would climb a mountain if it meant have a place truly devoted to dancing.. Not a blitzed out, bullriding club like the Cowboy.. but a cool lounge where each night featured different dance themes.. Monday Salsa, Tuesday Merengue, Wednesday HipHop, Thursday Swing...
To go with the theme of a theater/restaurant, how about an open-air amphitheater/bar. Sort a drive-in, but without cars. Some place you could get a couple of drinks from a bar, then go sit on a blanket or something with your friends while a movie plays on the big screen overhead.

You'd have to have a good wall and patrols to keep minors from climbing in, but I think it could be done.
1. I wish we had a decent dance club--and I don't mean a space on a floor in a restaurant that's open every so often, but a place *dedicated* to dance--the kind of place that would have a rave once in a while.

And I know Fire and Ice exist... but they suck

2. An independent film theater
Fire and Ice, the Electric Cowboy... I'm glad we have something, ANYTHING that gives us a dance floor, but they still fall short for me... The best time I have had dancing here wasn't even in a club. It was at Dance Connection taking salsa lessons! They roll through the lesson for an hour, then they have a dance party for everyone. Every Thursday - dance lesson from 7-8pm, dance party from 8-930pm.

Headed there this Thursday! Bring your friends!
Smokeless bars and restaurant = fabulous. I love going out in San Francisco and NYC these days. Even Irish bars are smokeless, and you don't stink when you get home.

We need a great Caribbean restaurant/nightspot with fabulous run drinks and sexy dancing. Hint, hint: Chef Godfrey is the man if someone helps him get it going.
I'd like to see the Pix/Capri become a multi-use theater for independent films, live music, live theater, comedy, community meetings, etc. And I want it to have at least a beer bar (MQ anyone?) and tons of seating configurations. Oh...and bathrooms.
And A/C? :) Awesome idea. The Pix/Capri is perfectly poised to become the multi-use theater you've described.. Live music, theater, comedy, community meetings.. It will just take a group of us making it our mission to make it happen. I think this city deserves it!
I am DYING for that to happen. It would be so perfect. Like the Belcourt in Nashville, which I adore.
I'd like decent movie theater in the city limits that served good food and had restaurant style(or something close to it) seating.
Let's start with a decent movie theater in the city limits. :-(
I definitely agree with getting The Pix or someplace like it going to serve as a multi-purpose performance/cinema/meeting space. I'd also like to see a decent wine shop (as in wine exclusively--not a liquor store) "in" Fondren, rather than having to venture down to Kats or up to McDade's @ Maywood--guess there's no commercial space that's not within a church zone, though....

Of course, I'll always dream of FTW having its own little black box theatre, too....we don't need much room - maybe 3,000 square feet of raw space?
