Who's been the most inspiring role model or mentor for you?

Hodding and Betty Carter (owners of the Delta Democrat Times for many years in the middle of the 20th century, including the 50s and 60s when they decided editorially it would take an anti-segregation stance) were and continue to be inspiration for the JFP. Every so often Donna and I have asked ourselves "What would Hodding and Betty do?" (We find it amusing and enlightening that, at least on one occasion, the answer was turn out all the lights and wait with a shotgun trained on the front door.)

The overall lesson from the Carters was to stick to your "guns" on message and let folks come along with you when they're ready.

On the business front, the JFP is certainly fortunate to have mentors from many other weeklies around the country, including California, Colorado, Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina and elsewhere. We all succeed in different areas and by sharing that knowledge and learning from the wisdom of others experiments.

Oh, and if you ever figure you just can't get up in the morning, just think of Jeff Good. ;-)
