My wife and I bought some cool bags about 6 weeks ago for the specific purpose of not having to use plastic bags at the grocery store. The cost wasn't bad (5 for $30), and one of the benefits of using them that we never imagined is that it cuts down on the amount of bags we have to lug in from our shopping trips. The only problem we have is remembering to make sure they're in the car with us.

What's really interesting is seeing the faces of checkers and baggers when we tell them, "No, we brought our own." and handing rolled up bags to them. The vast majority just don't get it!

I finally broke down and bought a bunch of cotton shopping bags. After some false starts, I now have no problem remembering to bring them for grocery shopping, and it is great to avoid the bunny-like multiplication of plastic bags that way. However, I often forget to take them on incidental shopping trips for non-food items. Eventually, I will overcome that lapse because I find the plastic bags annoying - because they are so difficult to find a good re-use for. Most of them end up at Rainbow.
I, too, try to always take my own bags. I've got a great collection that I've picked up at thriftstores and the like over the years. I try to keep some in the car for incidental trips. I'm finding that grocery checkers are getting somewhat better at not thinking you're crazy for doing it. I also take all my used plastic bags to Rainbow so they can re-use them.
Hey, where did you get your bags? I've been looking for some myself, but that's kind of like trying to find a recycling center in Mississippi! I was looking for organic cotton. Also, I used to get recycled brown yard bags when I lived in Atlanta (the city would not pick up leaves in plastic bags), but I can't find them here either.
What's the benefit of carrying your own bags? I mean aside from having to carry the plastic ones. Are the bags heavier than they would be if using the store plastic bags?
Well, I am very conservative when it comes to using resources. For one thing, I try not to use a lot of plastics. In addition, I can't stand having a drawer full of plastic bags.
We got ours from Red Envelope, made by Envirosax (www.envirosax.com). They're not organic cotton, but I think they're pretty cool.

I've never heard of these yard bags, so I don't know where to find them. Sounds interesting though!
i have some really fun nylon bags from chico bag. they are sturdy (hold up to 30 lbs each) and have nice handles to make carrying a lot easier. got five of them online for less than $25! when i was in jackson checkers would get a little strange with me for bringing my own, so i started doing the self check-out thing at kroger, etc. make sure you tell the attendant you're using your own bags; you get 5 cents off for each one!

cheers,
