Got any tips to help me get started with a recycling regimen? I'm new at this, so I will need all the details. Any advice y'all have will be helpful!

I personally have small garbage cans (bathroom size) that I keep for plastic, glass, paper and aluminum. I keep them until I have enough to justify the trip to Rainbow (I live in Brandon) and dump them in the proper places in the back.

The little cans in my kitchen help me remember to seperate things.
We keep glass, aluminum and plastic bins in our laundry room and march them down to the recycling area behind Rainbow Co-op on Sundays. Of course, you can get a bin and put stuff on the street, but I'm not organized enough to get the day of the week right. :-)

Also, Office Depot has some inexpensive blue recycling cans/bins that you can use around the house or the office if you want an attractive indoor solution, and I've found that the street pickup folks will recycle using those bins of you like to keep things separated.
We do street recycling with the ubiquitous blue bins for separation kept out in the garage.

I've been recycling for almost 2 years now and have honestly found it to be easier than I thought it was going to be. Separating trash from recyclables isn't a big deal at all, even I don't mess up very often!
Thanks y'all. This helps a lot. I don't get curbside since I live in an apartment, so it sounds like Rainbow is the place to go. I have really limited space, so finding the right-sized bins/garbage cans will be an issue.

Do you have to separate the different kinds of plastic? Are there certain numbers that can't be recycled? Are you supposed to remove paper labels from bottles, etc.?
Yeah - I realize now that that was a really complicated question. If any other LoungeListers are interested in recycling and need help getting started, specific instructions can be found here:

There are many small things that you can do to get started. Go with the small stuff first. Get rid of plastic bags, and invest in a few totes (organic cotton maybe) to use when grocery shopping. Of course you can change out the light bulbs at home to compact flourescent. I also put my clothesline out this summer to cut down on energy expenses.

I just joined a site called www.freecycle.com. (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Freecycle-JacksonMS/ ) On this site, you can list items around your house that you might want to get rid but do not want to end up in a landfill.
I love line-dried clothes. There's nothing like that natural clean smell. There's something charming about a clothesline, too.
