LoungeList: Jackson's Local Social Network

Features and Uses for LoungeList.com

All... we're taking another look at LoungeList and trying to brainstorm ideas for making it more effective and enjoyable as a destination. Given the popularity of Facebook and Twitter on the national level, the question becomes -- what can a LOCAL social network add to that mix?

My first thought is more *discussions* particularly of local topics. But I'd like ideas.

If you have your wish, what would you like to see from LoungeList.com? More event listings? Live LoungeList events? Discounts? Happy hours? More photos?

Any thoughts along those lines are welcome. Thanks!

I think that a lot of the LoungeList content should be generated by LoungeList, rather than by the members. Facebook is so ubiquitous that it seems like "work" for a user to maintain two profiles, two sets of relationships, groups, albums, etc.

The real value of the LoungeList brand could come from hosting more 'real-world' events & meetups, specials, etc., and then using LoungeList.com to document those events. If LoungeList is a really prestigious brand, for example, I'd feel honored that my photo made the cut, so to speak. (This could also be done via my dream side project, 'WTF Jackson.')

Facebook also doesn't really have a great infrastructure for reviews. But maybe a little more casual, so that the features of Yelp aren't duplicated.

At the end of the day, I'd imagine LoungeList as more of a social blog that's less stuffy & more diverse than VIP's print magazine that builds the brand capital to recommend events, restaurants, and host cool events. Anything that duplicates the features of Facebook is just going to feel like a burden to keep up with.

You made some really good points. I don't use the loungelist so much because of facebook. But I do like having a central place to go for "more 'real-world' events & meetups, specials, etc., and then using LoungeList.com to document those events."

That's the kind of thinking I'm looking for. The strength of LL over FB is that there are people here that you don't KNOW, as opposed to FB which is a bit more closed off when you promote an event or post an image. Of course, integrating FB and LL so that you didn't have to post the same photo twice would be handy.

I agree that we should do a better job of LL-generated content. Of course that takes $$, but I'm going to work on it.

I like lounge list because I can see all the things happening at all the venues any given night without digging up a hard copy paper and finding right page etc.. It is easy to list things on there through JFP events . Pictures and photos, videos, would be nice !!but all you seem to have to do is click on the bands link for more info. I love the best bets feature.Maybe you could do a promo picture/videos of the best bet bands and other promo material a selected song or two maybe reviews/history; this might be complicated but the band could be responsible for supplying all material . Also more info pictures ,history location etc of the venues might be good for people not familiar with them or new venues. maybe a link to their info page?Or maybe bands could work up a press kit page that could be attached to their name I know most bands have a myspace page which might cover all this. anyway thanks for LoungeList and its concept it is a great community service.

I definitely like the concept - my "concern" is that there are so many avenues now to put out information through the many social networks, Facebook, Twitter, etc., that after a while it's info overload....for some. I tend to turn to JFP for all of the music listings, more so than other information outlets. They can't all be seen which is the idea that supports this...I'll read what the other comments are considering...thanks for opening this up...

David -- you're right -- I'm sure it's a bit too much to ask people to update events here when they're also busy with Facebook and, hopefully, getting in touch with the JFP so that we list their events online and in print as well.

I'm thinking we at JFP need to take more responsibility for events on this site and, hopefully, get a Facebook Connect thing going so that events on Facebook can be promoted here.

I also like the tools here for posting photos and videos -- and those items can then be cross-posted to Facebook. So, as Darren suggested, I think we'll work on more photos of events around town and get them up here.

Other thoughts?
