LoungeList: Jackson's Local Social Network

I can not help but wonder why there are soooo many vacant buildings in Jackson. I have traveled to a lot of cities around the world in my 60 years and have found that when there are a lot of vacant property, it's a sign that that city's economy is in the pisser. Even in Atlanta, we hear about the economy of Mississippi and the seemingly "We do not see it" attitude of most people here. If they do see it, then why dosen't someone tell the rest just how bad of a situation this cit6y and state are in. I see homes with no rain gutters on them... the foundation cracks and the owner looks as they do not have a clue! No sidewalks in residential areas...Streets that pull a "Beamer" apart....

Even a lot of the inhabited homes are in such dis-repair..... It kind of heart breaking to see people who do not know they are in such dire straits go about as if this is the norm across the country.... It's not. The Tax base is low, the middle class has left the city, crime seems to rival Oakland or Detroit.... I live off Northside and am hesitant about going-out. There is a great deal of monies being granted to this state for improvements of the quality of life for it's residents.. where is it going... Just an observation from a fresh pair of eyes!

Anyone from Mississippi who wish to enlighten me and the rest of civilization as to "what's really going on here" please comment.

The problem is that people have grown accustomed to their way of living or they think it is an improvement. It seems that anyone who tries to raise the bar is a sellout. We all want to turn our heads and blame someone else for our problem. The problem is simple. People have stopped communicating with each other. We only come together when there is a tragedy and that is mostly to gossip. It is my goal in this life to stop standing on the sideline and make things happen. I am a Northern transplant and having grown into a woman here. I have allowed myself to remain in a box that people wanted to keep me in. People don' t seem to want to progress. I commend Kenneth Stokes for doing what he thinks is best to help deter crime by challenging pawn shops, but it's not the guns. It's the people. We need to start valuing each other, valuing life. It starts with a smile, direct eye contact, sincerity. We need to get to know each other. True enough, there will be people who are just no good but we have to get to know them too. No one is perfect and each day we live is another opportunity to see the light and be graced by the knowledge and mercy of God.
Darnicia.... You have grown into a very astute woman. I did not know if anyone else saw the solution.... I am from the old school where self respect and respect for others and the "Cause".... was the primary goal. I am a transpplant too and want to help. I taught Mathematics in Colleges and Schools around the country and tried very no only to teach Math... but life also. You are correct, it's not the guns....It's partly a lack of basic moral thinking.."Do unto others......." Thanks for your insight
Blessings!

Thank you for your reply. I have taken alot of wrong turns to get to where I am at now.
Since I know my purpose now, I hope to help reverse the mind set that we have put ourselves in and to be a role model for the next generation of young people so that they can continue the process. Thank you Jesus! May we all be of one mind to do the same. I hope you have a wonderfully prosperous and positive day in the name of Jesus.
